Try the followig will restore your original config
Use xp disk as you would to do a normal install at the instalation screen pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows but leave your files as they are on the computer
all that will not be available are any updates that you installed due to your windows being back to its original install DONOT pick the change file system or your drive will be auto formatted that is a clean install that destoys all on the hard drive you will still need your serial number to reinstall

Im in charge of comuper maintanance at my work and this is my list of things I do to each computer on a weekly basis.
1. Defrag
2. Disk clean up
3. Lavasoft Ad-aware
4. Delete Cookies
5. Uninstall toolbars/ crap u dont need or recognize
6. Spybot

on the net there is a couple ggod apps one is www.ewido.com free online scan and removal of over 300,00 threats and malware adware and trojans. then delete all temp files do a serch for temp and delete whats inside of the folders then open my computer from desktop and right click c drive run checkdisk do not click on the radio buttons leve them blank. Then defragment and there should be a noticable speed differance.

run a virus scan and a spy ware scan if you don't have one check the interent there are tons of free ones. make sure you clear your history and in your yahoo messenger stuff keep can slow your pc
