Stockinette looks like V's when you look at it, it's flat and smooth. If you are knitting in the round you would knit every stitch on every round (row). If you are knitting flat you would knit all the stitches across one row and on the next row you would purl all the stitches to the end. Knit on RS or public side, purl on WS. Hope this helps, good luck.

The stockinette stitch is when you knit one row and then purl the next row and follow that pattern for how many rows the pattern calls for.
Here's a site that has a video to help w/the stockinette stitch:

Knit all RS rows and purl all WS rows.

The stockinette stitch is the opposite side of the knit stitch if you look on the back. it looks like this, after you knit... if you desire the stockinette stitch throughout, just purl each row.. its easy.

Knit on the right side and purl on the wrong side. So if you're knitting flat, knit one row, purl one row, and repeat. If you're knitting in the round, knit every round.
