this is one of the stupidest things in the world.
its just something that people say they'll do to take the permanence out of a breakup. and someone ALWAYS takes it to mean more than it does, and then is hurt even more when "friendly" relationship is still a major step down from the previous relationship..and its like breakin up all over again..but worse..

Well, that's a tough one!
Probably so if the person doesn't meet someone new but if and when they do...their new partner might get jealous. I've been there and done that and lost a best friend thanks to his jealous girlfriend.

sure why not... but i think it's hard in your case to know that you are just friends while you are having extra feelings... in that case you two stay as friends and move on with your love life...
