Baby boomers get to boast they grew up listening to Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Stones, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, etc etc etc. Gen Xers get Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. My generation gets Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Oasis, Green Day, =w=, and so on.

When kids of the current generation turn 30-40, what will their hall of fame bands be?

Please excuse the pessismistic nature of my question. The Babyboomers get to take pride in bands that the world idolized, bands that were virtuous in their musicianship, songwriting, bands that broke down barriers and broke records. I just don't feel that is happening anymore...

Metallica and U2 will still be around, but that is probably Gen-X. I really like the Killers and Evanesence.

The bands that will be discussed years from now probably will not be the one that commercial radio keeps bombarding us with. The current 'pop rock' is probably going to be viewed similarly to the New Wave music of the 80s. It will be remembered, but with a bit of a 'bubble gum' sort of quality.

The bands that will be considered legendary are the ones that right now are quietly making a statement, and have strong cult followings. They will influence other bands who will be more popular commercially than they are, and that's how they will become well-known.

I think a good example is Opeth - while they not be a household name, they have definitely had a strong influence on hard rock lately. They're a band that will inspire musicians, and then the fans of these musicians will scope them out after hearing their idols talking about them in interviews.

I'm Generation X and I like most of the new stuff better than the stuff sometimes listed for Generation X :-)

I figure you'll see Green Day and System of a Down for the progressive ways in their music and beleifs .... Nickelback, Staind, and Three Doors Down will rate for sure.

Others will be on watch status for me would be groups like Slipknot, Audioslave, Evanescense, Seether, and a few others.

Right now has too many that has only 1 cd out and hard to guess

no, its not happening anymore.so many younger people now feel like parents of kids who liked the beatles did in the 60's they hate rock n roll. its all about pop music.thats what rules the charts and mtv and everything else, its more about image than music now. even alot of the radio "rock" bands are pop i just dont think bands like my chemical romance or panic at the disco and bands like that make any difference because theres so many that sound the same, and look the same i dont think any will be "hall of fame bands"

Foo Fighters are definite front runners to be on that list. I would also have to add Coldplay, Evanescence & No Doubt.

Rappers dominate right now, current Rock and Roll offerings are somewhat lacking.
