I used to ride all the time when I was a kid, but recently, I went riding and I could not keep my balance past a canter! I was embarrassed as I told everyone I was with, that I could ride just fine. Because I really thought I could! What am I doing wrong? My ankles are straight under my knees, Im not leaning back or forward, heels down, etc. yet as soon as Im ready to run, I start sliding off the saddle and holding the horn for dear life! Any advice would be great! Thx!

It sounds as though you have not found your "seat". Your weight is also not properly placed. Don't be embarrassed or upset. Take a lesson from a teacher and you will be surprised at how quickly you will regain your proper "seat" again. Good luck, don't stress and have fun. Also wear proper riding clothes, such as breaches with the suede insets to help to stay in the saddle. Are you wearing proper boots too?

Don't worry! It happens to a lot of people. When you were younger, you had to practice. You need to practice again as well!

It's not like riding a bike. You're sitting on a moving, massive animal that has a will of it's own. Keep practicing! Take it slowly. Canter for a bit, then slow down to a trot. Then bring yourself back up for a bit longer, and then back down. You'll be galloping in no time!!

One thing is, maybe since you hav'nt ridin in a while, it's just a starting off thing. The same happened to me. Don't worry, you'll learn to stay on and keep your balance better. Remember to:
1: Squeeze with your thighs and legs as hard as you can.
2: If you start to lean more to one side, lean the opposite way.
3: Pull the reins back, then release to slow down the horse if your losing your balance.
4: Have fun with it!

Wear jeans - the rougher fabric tends to prevent you from sliding down the saddle. While in the middle of the saddle - shift your weight back while keeping your back straight. Look at how cowboys ride tall in the saddle.

Your going to have to ride more often. That is the only thing wrong. Just like riding a bike. I do the same thing every year. During the winter I don't ride then come spring it takes me a few weeks to get use to everthing again. Just ride more.
