Why do we have so many stereotypes? I hate it, we judge people according to fu**** stereotypes. "Oh, he's white so he doesn't know..." "He's gay so he does this and that..." people stereotype simple things as a race color or a sexual preference. straight, gay, blond, black, white, etc.

People can't help it. People are brought up this way of thinking. However, if people will start to use their minds and see beyond their own prejudices, then we'll all be living in a better world.

There is a basic human need to categorize everything and everyone around us. We do that subconsciously so we know how to act or react to situations. We feel better when there is a familiar context surrounding things in our environment.
Stereotypes are often based on observed behavior at some point in time. Sorry to burst your bubble on that but honestly, stereotypes are based on some truth. The application of the stereotype can be hurtful as it certainly can't apply to every individual and when it doesn't, it can be insulting. Also, some people use stereotypes intentionally to hurt others.
But I do believe everyone still uses stereotypes at some conscious or subconscious level to predict their environment--even you! So don't pay so much attention to it. Besides, the only power words have over you is the power YOU give those words. So if you don't care "it" won't matter.

It is just a human trait and most of the time unintentional and may not have any lasting effect in a given situation! Only in very rare cases such an approach is adopted on purpose. On some occasions, as The Great Inquisitor seems to suggest in her well-carved answer, people do so to establish a link or relationship with others! So, however annoying it might be sometimes, I don't think one should bother to give it a second thought or take it so seriously as to affect one's relationship already or being developed with others!

I live in Texas, and have had people ask if I rode a horse to work or knew how to use a lasso. Those aren't hurtful, but the trailer dwelling, inbred, uneducated, racist crap is. There are rednecks everywhere, and not all southerners are what Jeff Foxworthy describes. I may have a strong accent, but I finished college and have never said a racist thing in my life. And I do NOT live in a trailer.

I'm Asian and they automatically think I'm smart and a wiz at math. Unfortunately, I am smart and I suck at math. But the stereotypes sucks... I've seen in. However, to do my fair share of going against such a terrible thing, I try to look deeper into the person. It works.
