Yes and no.
I grew up on the 60's having been born in 1953. It was a great time. with many social changes coming about, new music, and a feeling that the world was about to change. And it did, indeed.
The best part of the sixties was the freedom from fear of rampant crime. We went all over the place on our bicycles with never a worry about gangs, sexual perverts, or drive by shootings. Such things certainly existed on a much smaller scale, ad it wasn't until the world was connected by satellite and other instant communications that we became aware of how common these things were.
Which brings us to the bad parts. The social engineering that took hold in that time frame certainly has done nothing to relieve poverty, crime, or win the war on drugs. Pandora's box was opened and we legislated rights. No one bothered to tell anyone that along with rights comes common sense.
As a result we have become a society of victims, self polarizing groups each with their own lobbyists in every level of government.
Along with the awaited globalization has come the reality that we as Americans have priced ourselves out of a lot of jobs.
Overall the changes have been great in my 52 years, to keep it all in perspective one must consider there is only one constant in life, that being change. We'll look back with fondness on 2006 someday and make the same type comments I have made about the 60's.

In some ways yes, but generally, not. There was more air pollution (leaded gas, no catalytic converters). There were no home computers! A color TV cost a LOT and you had to warm it up 10 minutes before you could watch your show.
Most of all, there was the Vietnam War and the Draft. If you were the right age... those things sucked big time. (No offense intended to veterans, and, no, I'm not a Pinko).
