like for instance if i drop a fork or spoon my mother-in-law would say woman/or man is coming from ???? direction to visit. now is this true or just a old wives tale or myth and what are the different things ???

I was brought up with the same folklore...man or woman will visit...if a knife was dropped the person who dropped it was not allowed to pick it up or it meant a death. Someone else had to pick up the knife.

If I drop a spoon or fork, that means I am clumsy. Yes I have heard that old saying with a fork, however it bologna.

Never heard of that one. My mother-in-law freaked out once when I stepped over my infant son instead of walking around him. bad luck or something. I say the only thing dropping the utensil means is a possible loud noise and scratch on the floor. :)

so this is a dumb answer...
in the philippines, we have the superstition that if u drop a fork a gentleman will knock on ur door and if its a spoon a lady.

Heard the expression: Goes to the floor comes to the door. Person that told it always associated it with money, but never worked for me. Couple of times person joked about sex of person bring money, but never got into direction.

It does not really mean any thing to me. But i think it is just a wise tale that others just say to scare their company or children not to drop their silverware.

It is true you dropped a fork or spoon,
it is not true that it implies anything other than eating with dirty cutlery.
