Probably because the tradition of naming teams was based on the color of their socks. Besides, the Yankees are not the first team in MLB to wear pinstripes. The Philadelphia Phillies were, and though they stink, they were first.

They are named after the yankees from the civil war because most of their fans carry guns, just like the yankees did then.

Oh in case anyone doesnt know the word YANKEE is a derogatory word from the Dutch! I can't repeat it here but basically it means bleeping idiot! Look it up or YAHOO! it or GOOGLE the word.
