Sometimes a child wants to act like the "big man on campus" other times well who knows... sometimes to impress other "peers" is an issue. I recall when I was younger I did not listen to my mom and I followed some other kid and "hid in the bin-box-cubicle thing"...well it was odd for me I just felt like being a little rebellious or was it something more? I mean did it have to do with "animal products"? What is controllability? What is brain function? What is yeast?
BRAIN is what?
What is the "input" of any given child? Well sometimes kids who are more "out-going" need to be treated with more the ability for them to handle more freedoms if they can handle it perhaps.... but yes there are dangerous issues where sometimes you as a parent have to show the child either thru EXPLANATION or what have you.... Ex. the danger of a swinging door or the danger of the "toy" down the slide... sometimes it is all about PHYSICS. Show the child with a "doll" or something going down the slide on the toy and then even show a cartoon depicting the possible danger, not to "scare the child", but to warn them. Now you have to be very careful someone who is really "tricky" 'like old "sinister johnson" may come along and use this tactic to "pipe" the children off to never never land.... so be careful.... VOLDEMORTS BIG SLIDE
They were started out on learning "good things" and then the next thing you know they were doing bidding for the "corrupted mob".

You have to find someone who the kids really like and if that person has to use a firm voice with them (ever), it will surprise them, and they will listen, no questions asked. Kids don't listen to yelling either. If you talk to kids like they are little adults, they will respect you more. My daughter is treated like an adult and she is 5. But, I can trust her more than my 9 yr old that doesn't live with me. I know she will make the right decisions. She always does.

Children have what I call selective hearing. They must have consequences that they know ahead of time are going to happen if they do not listen like time out.

Because they are children. Children are supposed to try adults, so they'll know what they can or can't get away with. Especially if you are not their parent or primary caregiver.
