For basic Internet Access and simple Word Processing you do not need heavy loads of memory or very high amount of Processor power.

I have a 6 year old P3 500 Megahertz with 1 Gb RAM , Sound Card, AGP Video Card, NIC ( Network Interface Card), CD Writer, DVD Player , Modem etc. I am using Win2k with Service Pack 4 and it has been totally perfect so far.

This , above mentioned PC, happens to be my main computer. Most of the times I use a Laptop.

I had got it for about US$ 350 that time. So now at this point if you get a very basic computer( even a used one should do ) it should totally serve your purpose.

You can also find really cheap desktops at ebay as well.

You can check here for used budget Laptops.

Try this site. It lists several good products.

Google has a free on-line spreadsheet that is free to use and you can access your budget information from any computer connected to the internet.

Or you may want to do a Google search using "free online + spreadsheet budget system" . The Google site should be the first one listed. You may have to register to use it if you do not already have a Google account.

Good Luck

Linux is a free download, but there may be a learning curve. I've seen Windows XP Home upgrade in the stores these days for as low as $69.

You can just get the basic Windows XP Home and then get something like an office software package, it would be A LOT cheaper to do that.
