I will be a first time high school teacher in August and while I am in Raleigh this year, I would like to observe or volunteer with a high school teacher, is this possible

Absolutely. Call the school, go straight to the principal if need be, and let him know what you want to do. Maybe they'll even take you on as a sub once you have a feel for the place.

I'd recommend observing as many people as you can as you can learn from each of them.

Personally, I'd LOVE to have a volunteer in my room.

High School Teachers are attacked and criticized constantly by everyone and everybody, mostly the parents, the students and a very, very terrible administration so they may ask for a volunteer and be accused of harrassing poor kids, they may designate a volunteer and be called down to the office. This is a nation where teachers are literally crucified by horrible brats and greedy, selfish parents, plus a very low-grade administration. Teachers do whatever they can amidst this cruel chaos.

Sure, some high schools have volunteers. However, mostly it is elementary schools which request volunteers. Contact the schools in your area and ask.

It should be part of your Bachelor of Education degree program. I am an education student (I already hold a BA in English) and in order to legally teach in my area, I need twenty week of full-time "volunteer" experience in schools. This twenty weeks is completed over the course of two years as part of the degree program.
