When your ferret first sees his litter box he won't know what it's for. He'll just think it's a nifty digging box or a cool place to sleep.
So you need to take a piece of poo and put it in his litter box. Leave it there for a day or so. He'll get the message.
Scoop the box twice a day and wash it out with hot soapy water once a week once he starts using it. He might not want to use a dirty potty.
Also, watch him when he first wakes up. Most ferrets will have to go within minutes of waking. When you see him backing up into a corner with his tail up, grab him and put him in his litter box.
Praise him lots and give him a treat if he does his business then, better luck next time if he doesn't. Don't ever scold or hit a ferret. They have such a slight build that you can easily hurt them.
Put bedding on every surface in the cage. I use old t-shirts, they are washable and ferrets love to sleep and burrow in laundry anyway. Hang water bottles and/or food dishes in the corners as well. The majority of ferrets will not poop where they eat or sleep.
Sometimes ferrets don't like the shape of the litter box or the type of litter being used, but try what I said before first, it should work.
Do you let him out of the cage? Make sure he goes FIRST, before you open the cage door. He'll learn that he won't get to play until he visited the potty, but be aware that ferrets are very smart. They will go in the potty pretending to poop just to fake you out and get you to open the door. Also, make sure you have litter boxes in the room he plays in. Mine are all trained, but there is one spot by the door they will always try to poop on. I think it's a marking behavior because it's by the door and that's where all the "strange" scents from the world outside come in. I simply started putting paper down in that corner. I get Penny Savers and Auto Traders at the gas station and the grocery stores and I have people save their news papers for me.
Good luck to you with your fuzz ball, don't give up.
PS: Ferrets are not like cats. They don't bury their poop, they won't ever be 100% accurate and they DO forget, so you'll have to retrain them once in a while. It's a work in progress. Only one of my four is always on target and never forgets.

What kind of litter are you using? Stay away from wood products. It hurts their feet so they wont like to go into it. Paper products get all mooshy, and stinky fast and they don't like that either. Use a clay with a slight crystal base ( a high qaulity cat litter ). The crystals really help to keep down odor, but it's not necessary to buy the really expensive stuff that is all crystals. Once you have a littler product that doesn't hurt or irritate your baby, they will be more prone to use it. Of course it is hard to break them of using the potty else where once they start, but I rub my ferret's nose in it when it's still wet ( she hates that ) then give her a firm spank on the rump ( but be very gentle. Their bones are very fragile ) and give her a very aggressive and firm "NO! Bad Girl!" then put her right into the litter box right after. Every time you see her potty in the box make sure you give her a very positive and enthusiastic sounding praise. If you are having issues with her not returning to her cage to go potty when she is out for her daily excersize, get a pet carrier and put a litter box in it. Every time she potties on the floor give her a 10 to 15 minute time out in the carrier with just the box. Don't return her to her cage and lock her up for the day. She will associate going back to her cage for a potty as a "If I go back in there, they are just going to shut me in and my fun day will be over!" If you do the carrier trick, you will find it works rather well.

I have a three level cage, my two boys sleep & play with toys on the top level,
eat, drink and play with a paper bag on the second level,
and poopie on the bottom level, I have a plastic dishpan with kitty litter and they use it. I guess it just came natural to them because they were so easy to train.

Ohh, my ferrets do not like the corner litter pans either. They prefer something they can get their whole body in. I also line the wall behind their litter box with newspaper so if they miss--it doesn't get the wall.

try putting his litterbox in the corner but not directly in the corner. make some space between the corner and the litterbox about this much [------------------] If you do that then your ferret will have a high chance of going in the litterbox. When or if your ferret does, then make his pooey burried in the litter, then he will know to go in the litterbox becuase his scent is in it. If he does go then PRAISE THAT LITTLE FUZZY LOL

What sort of litter pan are you using? They don't like the little corner pans and much prefer the larger boxes. They like to be able to get their whole body in the pan.
