Should the Geneva Convention and all its rules be suspended when we go to war with a country that does not subscribe to it? Our military is facing enemy combatants firing from behind women and children. Should we suspend the Geneva Convention so everything is on a more equal footing?

I don't think the Geneva Convention applies to terrorist, I sure don't think it ought to be used in this war! I'm sure you know the disgusting things they do to Our People when they are caught. They are inhuman pieces of CRAP!

Sure. If we want to fight at the same level as that terrorists, and through out the rules that every civilized country has adopted, why not?

I mean, yes it makes us no better than the terrorists we're fighting, but that seems to be what people want.

All that is required is Congress passing a law that amends or repeals 18 USC 2441 (definion of war crimes), a version of which has already been submitted by the White House. And to revoke our ratificatin to the Third and Fourth Geneva Convesions, which is within the authority of Congress.

Since we've already abandoned any concept of fairness or justice or morality, we might as well make it official.

We could, but how would you feel about "firing behind a women or child"? If we move to that point are we any better than those that we are fighting.

No. We should hold ourselves to a higher standard. Taking the position that it's ok to do something unlawful as well inherently dishonorable because someone else did it first will just give others a solid reason to assume our inherent lawlessness and lack of honor--and leave our captured people open to any kind of ill treatment that can be dreamed up by those inclined to do so. Only by refusing to sink to that level can we lay claim to an ethical position, and regain the respect of friends and foes alike.

Even war must have rules or we turn into beasts. I went to war at 18 by the time I left I would have killed any man, woman, dog, cat, child, pig or goat to keep me and my friends alive, death becomes nothing, you will kill some because he "might get us killed" . It is as much about keeping us in check as them.

We are bound to it by our honor .The pres. wants to change it so the US can treat the terrorists with some of what they do to our ppl. He wants to be able to get info out of them by any means to help us out with fighting the terrorists. If he is able to change the rules, then all countries will be able to do the same. I think it needs to remain the same so we and our soldiers will be safer from all countries horrors of torture. Isn't everything in a mess lately?

No we don't make rules and throw them out as soon as they become a little tough to follow. If we thow them out now when do we get rid of them the next time and when does our enemy decide to throw them out next time saying to the world its ok because we did it last time.

no - being a signatory to the convention is what distinguishes us from the animals, besides willingly killing innocent people from any group or race is simply wrong.
