Depends on which Spider-Man you are speaking of. If you are speaking of the comic book Spider-Man (both original and Ultimate Spider-Man) Peter Parker has a genius level intellect and finished a formula his Dad has been working on (before he died) that created the mixture Spider-Man uses for his webbing. He loads this mixture into tiny shooters that attach to his wrists and the button to use the shooters is in the palm of each hand (which is why Spider-Man makes the "devil horn" hand gesture each time he shoots web. He's using his middle and ring fingers to depress the buttons in his palms.
As for the movie Spider-Man, the director didn't feel that a 16 year-old should be smarter than all of the people working at 3M (sticky stuff makers extraordinaire) so he made the ability to shoot webs from his wrist become part of what happened when he was bitten by the radioactive spider (which is funny since spiders spin webs from their abodmens - don't think that would translate to the big screen very well though...). Anywho, the movie Spider-Man has orgain web shooters. He makes the Trademark "devil horn" hand gesture when he bends his wrist back in order to shoot the webs from slits in his wrists.
As for Spider-Man's muscles, he's not a bulging, muscle-bound bohemoth, but he is fairry muscular, lythe, and has the agility and strength of a spider. A good place to read up more on this is "The Physics of Superheros"
Check out the Spider-Man Wikipedia entry, under the "Powers, abilities, equipment, and costumes" section.
Hope that answers your questions.

It depends upon which Spider-man we are examining. The original Spider-man has webshooters which he created using a web formula which he created. Spiderman in the films has it being organic.

When he was bitten by the spider he gained the knowledge of how to produce spiderwebs, He made then and kept them in canisters on his hip, He also make a device that went on his hand to shoot the web out.

Spiderman is a geek, he does not have any muscles. in the comics, he concocted the webs using a chemistry set, because he is a geek. in the movie, they came naturally.

Thanks Madsalad1. i thought i was going to have to type all of that myself. You did such a good job with the explanation.
Spiderman was introduced by Marvel Comics during the Silver Age of comics and there is a website devoted to that period of comicdom. there are histories of Heroes and Villians to be found there
