FYI, fish are probably the least messy pet you could get.

I'd say get a snake, but then you'd have to keep buying mice to feed it.

What about a hermit crab?

A stuffed animal or hardy fish. All other pets are messy in some respect.

Honestly, very few pets will be able to handle the stress of a class room. And it's really not fair to put them into such a situation where students can harass the animal, feed it potentially dangerous things, and so on.

What's the point of a classroom pet anyway? Who's going to care for it? Is the teacher going to take it home during breaks (summer, Xmas, ect.)? What will be done with the pet once the school year is over?

Uhh, all pets are messy and need care. If you REALLY can't have anything messy, i suggest a rock, but you would probably hate the idea.

What about chinchillas? Rats? Mice? Hamsters? They're ALL messy! ALL ANIMALS ARE MESSY! Fish would actually be the LEAST of your worries! Hello? Are we on the same page?

What about.......... a betta in a betta vase? IT ISN'T A BIG DEAL! All animals are messy, and your teacher must be lazy. Go ahead. Report me. But I'm just telling you that ALL ANIMALS ARE MESSY and if you can't have a messy animal, DON'T GET ANY ANIMAL!!!!! All of my teachers lived with it!!!!!!!!!

I hate to break it to you, but fish are about the easiest thing to take care of - especially in a classroom setting. It does depend on what sort of fish you get, though. A few betta's here and there around the room, goldfish, guppies...anything "sturdy." I wouldn't advise getting a hampster - they only get loose and get stuck in the radiator because somebody left the freaking door open - again!

Gerbils and Hamsters are the most common and easiest to take care of aside from fish. Some teachers choose to get a type of reptile but they are germy and may carry bacterias harmful to the students.

I would highly recommend a hermit crab -- it is one of the only pets I can think of which would be able to sustain itself for weekends alone, and is relatively low maintenance. Hopefully there is an assigned student to care for it over summers! :)

We had a Hamster...or maybe try a Hermit Crab...fun to watch. A pet in the classroom is fun, but if it dies it can be a sad day for a bunch of kids...... Good luck....

The iguanas in my 5th grad classroom were the easiest class pets I ever experienced.

The duck was my favorite though, but very messy!
