I've been taking paid surveys for a while. A lot of them are on particular products, or on an ad for a particular product--they ask about things like "Would you want to buy this product, why or why not?" "Does what this ad say seem realistic or un-realistic." "If this was $5 how likely would you be to buy it."
Or sometimes they ask general questions about types of products--like "When you shop for clothing what is most important to you: price, design, reputation, quality, etc."
I guess these help them know how best to advertise their products and services, or which products they should carry, or how much of a certain product they will be able to sell. And I can see where that would save them money in the long run.
Why more people don't do it. Well, it doesn't pay a lot usually, $1-2 per survey. Don't believe any site which says you can make an income off this. You can't. You can make a little extra spending money and that's it.
But see, I like to give my oppinion about stuff anyways (like right now) so I enjoy it...and I'm a stay at home mom on a budget and any little extra is nice.
I've listed some of the sites I have taken surveys through and actually been paid (or recieved other rewards like gift cards or CDS) on the following, if you are interested:

Oh, and heres my tips on how to avoid survey scams. While there are many legitimate survey sites out there, there are also some you will want to avoid.
Don't sign up for any survey site which asks you to pay to access the surveys. Also watch for language like "get paid for taking surveys AND SIGNING UP FOR OFFERS" if you don't want to have to sign up for stuff with other companies to get paid.
Always carefully read their terms of service and privacy policy. If in their privacy policy they say they only use aggregated info, this is GOOD SIGN they are legit. Aggregated info information that is grouped together so it can't be connected with anyones personal identification like name, e-mail, phone or address. That's what survey sites SHOULD collect. Watch out for sites that say they give, rent, or sell any personal information (info that is not agregated) to third parties.

The reasons that everyone is not doing surveys is because of the scam site that ask you to pay to join, some people think it is a waste of time and the amount of email that you get (that is why I have a 2nd email address just for surveys) and yes there are legitimate surveys sites, personally I belong to the "top five" and I just spend about an hour a night doing surveys, best thing is I get paid good money monthly

there's quite a few that do well for me.
You won't retire on it, truth be told, but between all of the surveys I take, I probably bring in an extra $20-$30 per month, plus get free "sample" products to try out & give my opinion.
Send me an e-mail & I can refer you to specific sites (so that I can get some credit, duh) :)
