I have been on the depo-provera shot since 1999. I was sopose to get my last shot in May of this year but I skipped it. My fiance and i are wanting children (we are getting married soon) and so the doctor suggested going off as soon as possible since it can take a really long time to get pregnant. Especially since I have been on it so long. I have only recently switched doctors and she is scaring me a little bit saying I should not have been on the type of birth control for such an extended amount of time and it may hinder the chances of us getting pregnant. Is this true? I told her that we want kids in the near future (2-3 years from now) and that I would still like some form of birth control just not one so foolproof. She said she would consider a prescription for a lighter form of birth control after i have been off depo for at least 8-12 months. Is this safe at all? We want kids but not this minute. if it happens it happens, life isn't scripted. Please give me your thoughts.thanks

I have had 2 periods in the last 30 days. Each lasting aprroximately 5 days. I spotted and had some real funky stuff within 2 months of being off the depo. Am am returning to normal? Should i be very concerned about a pregnancy? The doctor seemed to think I might be able to get pregnant in 18-24 months. if this is true then why do they demand a pregnancy test if you miss the 6 day window for getting your shot? Seems kind of strange to me. Please Help!!

My sister just had a baby 3 months ago and she was told she would never have kids due to too much scar tissue in her uterus and surrounding areas from cists. She was on the birth control patch as well and still got pregnant. My mom said that if my dad even looked at her sideways she would get pregnant. Could this mean I have better chances? Fertile Mrytle so to speak.

in all honesty you can get pregnant at anytime on or off birthcontrol, NO birthcontrol is 100%. I do know of people who were on the shot and got pregnant. They had been on it for like 5 yrs when it happend also. I myself got pregnant while on the patch and I also have a couple friends that got pregnant while on the pill. SO yes it can happen. I have heard that the longer you are on the shot the longer it will take to get pregnant, BUT the average time is like a year. So I would go off of that and DO NOT freak out chances are that you will be fine and it will all go alright. Goodluck
ALSO I have NEVER heard of that causing people to NOT be able to have kids EVER. That is SOLEY A MYTH!!! I have heard that the IUD can cause infertility NOT the shot that is hormones and that CAN be regulated. Unlike with the IUD which CAN cause uterine scarring. So please do not freak out.

I was on Depo for 2 years. got off in December, and got pregnant last month in August. I heard all the same things that you did about it taking so long, so I figured that I had plenty of time to plan for a baby. Be careful, if you're not ready to have a baby RIGHT NOW i would not have unprotected sex. Everyone's body is different, so you never know.

Every woman is different. It onl took me a couple of months to get my period back and get pregnant after being on Depo for 8 years. If you do not want children now, I suggest using some other form of birth control. If you are getting periods you can get pregnant.

It has been proven to cause problems in some women. I had one shot after my first miscarriage and it took a year for my period to return and another year for me to get pregnant. It could possibly take 2 years or longer. I had to go on Yasmin (Low-dose) to fix the damage to my hormones that the depo caused, and I got pregnant 2 weeks after stopping it.

What you've heard is right, two of my GF's were on Depo for years, and it took one 5 years to conceive, and the other is still trying 3 years later.

According to my doctor, women who ever want kids are not recommended to take depo, becuase it alters the body too much, apparently some women never concieve, even with IVF.
