Yes, it's normal. I also have McAffee virus scan and it really slows down my computer's performance. I have the same problem as yours, so now i'm thinking of switching to AVG. But i don't have any real problems yet with McAffee in terms of virus detection. Also, the extent of your computer files could be one factor for the slow-down as well as the computer set-up. McAffee has been known to be a resource hog so you might want to upgrade on your memory capacity. It would really help! :-)

It depends on your specific computer, but for an older machine with a small amount of RAM and slower processor, yes it is normal.

virus scanning can be a pain.... it shouldn't be totally restricting.... but if you are having problems... schedule it to run at like 3 am
