while it is not a sleeping pill, the herb scullcap (scutellaria lateriflora) is traditional remedy used to quiet an over active mind. it is considered a nervine relaxant and it often combined with another sedative herb. any remedy that causes a change in the action of the nervous system (sleeping pill, herb, etc) has the potential for "hangover". only after personal use can you determine the effect (ie some people report no "hangover" from scullcap, but experience "hangover" from chamomile). tinctures are the quickest method of delivery and are available in many health/natural food stores. i encourage you to research any herb in at lest three sources and check with your health care provider. herbalists do not treat, diagnose, cure, prevent, prescribe or provide medical advice.
blessings,
aunde

I took kava kava for awhile one year during a stressfull time and it helped me....I stopped taking it after my sister who lived in hawaii informed me that it is basicly a Alcohol subsistute in the pacific islands
As a rule, the following are some common feelings that most users report after taking kava kava:
A state of relaxation, without feeling drugged
Muscle tenseness is less
Peacefulness and contentment
More sociable, especially with the right company
Mild euphoria, sometimes
Mental alertness is often not effected, except on high doses
Initial alertness followed by drowsiness which comes on after a few hours, so kava can be taken in the evening, a few hours before bedtime.

Over the counter, valerian, chamomile tea. Turkey contains chemicals that makes you sleepy ie, after thanksgiving dinner.
If you are older (50+) melatonin (doesn't work on younger people)---but frin studies, too much appears to be harmful.
Change in temperature from hot to cold, therefore, warm milk, cocoa, chicken soup. Kava kava, but that is more like a mild drug.
