Go for cards based on 7600 gt chipset for budget cards..........
for little bit higher budget go for 7900 gt solutions
ultimate solution nvidia 7800 gtx in a quad sli setup but i don't think u will be able to afford it.......
these brands are the major brands in India and multinational companies
major companies which offer these chipsets are
xfx : premium quality high price factory overclocked
Asus : premium quality Good for overclockers medium range in price
Leadtek : Value for money brand moderate overclockers .. but crappy service.....

so pick ur choice

for Nvidia anyhting GeForce 5 or up sould work on Windows Vitsa. I currently have a 256 MB GeForce 6600 and Windows Vista works completely fine on it. I am planning to upgrade to a GeForce 7900GT 512 MB soon. If you will be getting a Geforce, make sure the 2nd number is above a 5, because those are the more powerful video cards.

PCI slot? Are u sure u dont even have an AGP slot?

There are no PCI cards with 256Mb, because it is far too old and slow.
Best chance is an Nvidia 6200 128Mb.

But i would recommand getting a new PC if all u have is PCI and u want a card with 256Mb.

This is by far the fastest PCI video card made, although it isn't all that fast: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814129062
