Just really need to know the actual reason why. Where did it come from?

That used to be the case. But with the advent of washers and dryers and washable wool. You can wear white year round depending on the fabric.

Lighter weight fabric in the south and heavier in the colder climates.

Because white and other light colors reflect more of the sun's energy and keep you cooler. In the fall, you would want to wear darker colors to absorb that heat and keep you warm.

I was always told it was a weather thing, white shows the dirt from rain and snow.
