The two terms are similar in that they both are forms of government in which the people vote.
A democracy is when everyone votes on everything. A majority group can potentially trample the needs of a minority group.
A republic is a government of representation. The people vote for representatives who then decide the issues. The United States is a Republic. The people are represented by the Congress and the Senate. The thinking being that the people would elect representatives who could make good decisions, not simply "popular" decisions.
When the U.S. citizens vote for president, they are really voting for representatives in the electoral college. These representatives then choose the president and vice president. Electors from each state simply followed the will of the voting majority by giving their votes to the candidate receiving the most popular votes. However, in the electoral college system, it is possible for candidates to win a majority of electoral votes, and therefore the presidency, without winning the nationwide popular vote. This has occurred three times in United States history: in 1876, when Rutherford B. Hayes beat Samuel Tilden; in 1888, when Benjamin Harrison defeated Grover Cleveland; and in 2000, when George W. Bush prevailed over Al Gore.

Democracy is when ALL citizens discuss and vote like in ancient Athens.
We have too many people in the US, so we have a republic. We can't all fit in Washington DC.
