My HP computer is a few years old. The fan used to run or come all the time, but not anymore.

It's probably dust. Any way to get rid of it? Like vaccuuming? Would you recommend that?

You did not say which fan .
The Power Supply as a fan which starts up when you start the pc . .
The CPU as a heatsink and fan on top of it.
Some pc cases have a cooling fan fitted inside the case.

If it is the heatsink/fan on the CPU close your pc down until you buy and fit a new one or you will overheat the CPU and burn it out.

If it is a case cooling fan replace it as soon as you can

try to keep the inside of your pc clean

The bearing sleeve in the fan has become worn or clogged with dust. You should replace the fan. If it is the CPU fan turn off the computer and unclip it from the processor mount disconnect its power supply and take it to your nearest computer store for a replacement that has the same design or dimensions. If its a case fan just measure the size of the fan, they are pretty standard or remove it by unscrewing it from the case.

like was stated but just want to claify a little, never operate the computer if the cpu fan (the fan on the processor on top of a cooling/heat sink) or the fan on the power supply isn't working, even if every once in a while it works, or you can be looking at a doorstop.

Hi. which fan is it? Best, answer is to replace it with a new fan, that usually helps. If it is the proc fan shut your pc off and buy a like fan asap....Good-Luck. pcr
