When salt is placed on a land slug, water from inside the slug quickly moves out through the skin to try and balance the salt concentration inside and outside the body. (osmosis) The result is that most of the water is sucked out of the slug and it dies.

Slugs don't "melt" when salt is poured on them; they simply dry out.
Slugs depend on being very moist to survive, and if they lose that moisture
they die. Salt is known for being very good at removing moisture from cells,
so when you combine salt and slugs, you have a slug raisin.

LOL!! In the garden and landscape section!

I would say it has to do with the salt reacting adversly to the mucous in the slug's membranes. But I also might be talking out my a$s too...

principle of osmosis
basically the water from the snail leaves to couterbalance the salt on the outside of the snail and then the snail dies.

first off, they don't melt they shrivel up. the salt is sucking up the water which, is what they contain, throughout their body.

I don't know why but I can only imagine how much it hurts them. I think one should think twice before causing pain and death to one of Gods creatures.
