is common sense a simplistic solution for those without the knowledge or ability to really analyse a problem. after all, the world is flat or we'd all fall off, and of course you can't make an iron ship, iron doesn't float, makes common sense doesn't it?

i want to reach for common sense when someone mentions a gun.

But that aside, i know what you mean.

No...common sense as defined by dictionary.com means:

"sound practical judgment that is independent of specialized knowledge, training, or the like; normal native intelligence."

You are comparing what is considered a common idea of good judgment to common knowledge. Common knowledge is always meant to be challenged or else we wouldn't have the inventions and the knowledge that civilization has acquired.

Running water, the voyage of Columbus, and the first iron ship are result of common knowledge being challenged...not common sense.

Common good sense is given to us for a reason. It is most unfortunate, the more intelligence that becomes evident, the less common sense remains. Leaving the intellect to act alone and create multiple problems that the individual cannot solve by him/her self. We are seeing evidence of that transformation by the number of people requiring psychological help.

You are confusing common sense with common knowledge, within certain eras of humanities existance.

Usually the expression is used when one wants to insult someone else, but, I hypothesize this expression originally acknowledged common or over lapping opinion across many cultural and ideological divides that differed in all other respects. Most likely it was invented between philosophers of different cultures searching the commonalities in human knowledge amongst their selves.

These days it could mean just about anything.

I agree with you. I handle such situations just by confusing them further and saying…..

Not all answers are directly proportionate to every question. But first, the Anatomy of a question must be examined.

What is a "question?" This is weird because one is forced to use the very entity being examined to examine the question of what a question is. This is an indication that there is something lacking in man's logic or his communication systems or both or something else.

The answer is within the answer...never the question. For if we answer before we are even asked, the answer is already there; isn't it? The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind, the answer is blowin' in the wind.

Hope you got your answer because I am not answering any more questions in this context nor am I questioning you further.

Hey are we in the 21st century now, or have I accidentally stepped out of the time machine and landed in the Middle Ages, again?

I am all for analysis too and yes sir the earth is round. So why resort to violence to resolve every petty issues with our guns? Truth is out there, look, examine and find them.

In the mean time we must also watch out for the so called modern legends and reality shows. They do look and feel truthful even to the analytical minded, but they are simply ludicrous.

There is nothing wrong with common sense. The world is flat, from a certain perspective. It is better to not make predictions about what you will find at the edges.

I have reasoned that "common sense" doesn't exist.

75% of people say, when asked, that they have more common sense than the average person......

.....which is mathematically impossible. If at least 1/3 of those people, and likely more than half of them, cannot recognoze whether or not they have something, isn't it at least possible that it doesn't exist?

Comon sense says don't touch a hot stove with your bare finger. I see no problem with common sense. Maybe the name is overused, but the concept is integral.
