In some states, such as New Jersey, they have attendents who pump your gas for you at the gas station. Everytime I pay them for the gas, I feel as if I'm supposed to tip them...but aren't they paid to do that job? Please help! What do I do? I'm single and have no kids and I work at a hospital!

It's illegal to self-pump in New Jersey. You must have an attendant pump your gas. There's no need to tip them, just simply reply with a polite "thank you."

When I was in New Jersey, I always told them to keep the change, though....

No, certainly not. A lot of places that require tipping are a pain in the butt. I hate tipping when I don't feel there has been any sort of special service. The attendant is paid to fill your car with gas, unless they do something wonderful they don''t need to be tipped.

I live in PA. We haven't had the luxury of gas station attendants in years! I am a nurse. No one tips me and I wait on people constantly. Not that I would take a tip even if it were offered.

When I was a kid, you always had an attendent pump your gas. Then it became an option with Full-Service and Self-Service, but even today, I don't think that you should tip him.

Absolutely not, does anyone tip you for doing what you are paid to do? Waitressess/Waitors yes by all means, because they are not paid even minimum wage. So, tips are their livelihood. But, for pumping gas.......no. Unless of course they go out of their way to do some special favor for you.

Did the attendant do something extra?
Just doing your job doesn't deserve a tip or I would get them too.

It is not required, but would be a good thing to do because it makes that person feel good about their job. Plus they might remember you and give you extra good service, such as checking your oil and cleaning your windshield.

no you do not. in fact I'm really tired of so many people expecting a tip to do their job. Do you get a tip for doing your job, neither do I. I know waitress that make $500.00 bucks in three days in tips. how does your job compare.
