Depends on what part of the country you're from and your social class, to some extent. Some parts of the country have tendencies toward a particularly dry wit. Some parts are better at sarcasm. Some are better with slapstick or silly humor. Some don't have any decipherable form of humor what-so-ever. I can deal with any sense of humor except violent, sexist, racist or homophobic humor. I'm very uncomfortable with people who can't tell if I'm joking or not. Older New Englanders and those from the northeastern part of the Mid West are often good with irony, but it makes them seem like they're standoffish or mean if you don't understand that they are joking.

It depends which Americans you're talking about. Most do have a sense of irony when they saw the president call for war but not participate in it.
Then there are Americans who can't see irony and I know that cause I irritated some right-winger off with a question about Tupac.

Yes I think this is true. I really like Yanks but I have found it is no good being too subtle with them. Remember the pilgrim fathers were fundamentalists with a pretty set view on the world. Maybe it comes from this

Yes and no. We can see irony in the mundane, but not in the important or global. We take things too personally; or, if they were meant to be taken personally but were still ironic, we take them too angrily.
Haha, I sound like a hippie!

It's a shame you come to a question and answer room for us all to hear your great intelligence.
Maybe one day you will work your way up to people who really give a damn what you say.
Now there's your irony...

It will be "ironic" if we have another terrorist attack, while our congress is deciding how to decipher The Geneva Accord rules.
Government agents are no longer interrogating terrorists. They fear being prosecuted.
That would be irony. Eh!
