I just installed a new rear u-joint on my 2001 Tahoe, it feels to tight after installation, I had to over tighten the joint to get retaining clips in, is this normal or do I even need to put clips in it if it is to tight or do I have a wrong sized u-joint?

if the u joint is tight in the shaft and is hard to move it is normal it is going to fit tight and you want it to it is not going to wear any faster if it is not tight it will clang when you drive it the u bolts will be a little tighter also because the old u loint was worn some the new one is not so dont worry if it is in and the clips went on and seated it is ok go ahead and put it back in

What part feels tight? The cups on the bearings or the clamp around the cups? If the bearings are tight, they will wear quickly.
If they are really tight you will hear noise while driving.
Did you compare the new ones with the old ones before you put them in? Sometimes the length or diameter differs on the same truck or the guy at the store doesn't know they are different. The cups must fit snuggly into the clamp. Did you have to tap the old ones out with a hammer? Usually there is rust in the clamps and they don't just slide together easily.

If you still have the drive shaft out, and you are having issues with the grease cups being to tight for the Ujoint to pivot freely.

You may have pressed the cups too far into the yoke to get the cir-clips to seat into the inner recess of the yoke.

Remove the other bearing cups being careful not to loose the little needle bearings inside the cups.

There is grease inside that should hold them in place as long as you don't drop it.

Now, use a wood block and a hammer to "nudge" the cups back out a little bit by whacking the U-joint both ways.

Check to see if it pivots freely.....if not, Whack it again......

Now put the cups back on. Making sure the needle bearings are all in place.

The grease seals should seat easily when putting the cups back on. If not, you may have had one of the needles fell over.

Good luck .

It shouldn't be that tough. I think you may have been given the wrong part. It's not a simple task putting it in but it should fit very nicely and not require any over-tightening.

drive it back out.you probably have 1 of those little needle bearings laying down in the cap.that will make it hard to put in the clip.
