ERA (Earn Run Average) is calculated by looking at earn runs (not total runs) giving up by that pitcher and multiplying it by 9. Divide the result by the number of innings pitch for that pitcher and you get an ERA.

Example:

IP R ER K
2 2 1 2

1 (Earned Run) x9=9
9 (result from last problem)/2 (innings pitched)= 4.50 (ERA)

WHIP (Walk and Hits per inning) is calculated by the total of Walk and Hits giving up by that pitcher and divided by the innings that pitcher has pitch.

Example

IP H R ER W K
2 2 2 1 1 2

2 (hits) + 1 (walk) = 3
3 (results)/2 (innings pitched)= 1.50 (WHIP)

A good pitcher should have an ERA between 0 and 4.00 and a WHIP of 0 to 1.30. Anything higher is an average or bad pitcher. Hope this helps.

How Is Era Calculated

ERA is Earned run's in a 9 inning game
So you take the number of runs given up and devide it by 9 innings
So if you pitch one inning and give up one run you have an era of 9.

Whip
Is walks and hits for an inning pitched
You add the walks and the hits toegether and then devide by the number of innings. For instance if you walk one person and get 2 hits in 2 innings you have a whip of 1.50

The lower both these numbers the better the pitching
