I don't want to pay 24.99 for something that I feel should be free.

I'm sure that you feel that a detailed vehicle history should be free, but the folks who run Carfax & Autocheck also feel that they have a right to be paid for a service that they offer.

Not much in life is free. Its been my experiance that autocheck is cheaper than carfax , but they also are sometimes not as accurate,.

At my dealership we often cross referance both companies. We run a report on vehicles that are being traded in too...sometimes people try to trade in 'bad' vehicles & we aren't about to be stuck with a 'cleaned' Katrina vehicle, for example.

& yes that means that we pay twice.

If you do find a free source....I wouldn't trust it.

Sorry !

You can get a limited VIN check from NICB.org. It doesn't give a complete history of the car, but
it does tell you whether it has been reported stolen or as a total loss.

If you are looking for the complete history of a specific vehicle - then there are no free sites. Every company needs money for operational costs. So, definitely, they cannot provide this service for free.

There are several companies providing car history reports. Carfax is the most popular but also the most expensive.

You can use cheap alternatives like http://bit.ly/CHEAPCARFAX . It costs $5 but the information is just as good.
