A little known secret is that Van Gogh really did not cut his own ear off.
It was bitten off by a late ancestor of Mike Tyson. ( Shhhhh )

particular, that's the story. that's even in my paintings appreciation e book. If it had not befell i don't think they might have positioned it in there as actuality. He had some kind of mental illness which gave him strong pains in the ear and actually dove him crazy. It was during one of these episodes when he cut it off...

Actually, the story about cutting off his ear is a myth to protect a manufacturer: he was talking on his cell phone when it exploded.

It appears that Vincent lived a dramatic and scattered life, with bouts of mental illness and chronic disease (syphillis, gonorrhea, scurvy?) and in a snit about not getting along with Gaugin, began stalking him, and cut his own ear off and mailed it to Gaugin.
Mental illness was rampant in his family and people he surrounded himself with.

I have heard that is was a combination of mental illness and a profound case of Tinnitis (ringing in the ear.)
