i have an old staircase where the metal spindles have been repainted many times. The paint is now very thick (gloss paint) and it is very awkward trying to strip them. (they have intricate patterns) any suggestions as to the best way to strip the paint will be very welcome.
thanks in advance

Buy a litre of "NITROMORS" paint stripper in a paint shop.
Paint on the jel paintstripper on the brass spindles, preferably outside on the concrete. leave several hours, scrub off the gunge. You may find that there is some stubborn paint in the detail, REPEAT This is for UK. IN USA buy jel paint stripper or thickstropic paint stripper N.B. i recently done this .first . use a heat gun to burn off the worst of the paint. don't heat too close or you will scorch the wood .then put on some nitromors and wire brush off the remains dont be too rough with the wire brush though or you will seriously mark the wood.then with some more nitros get some coarse wire wool and rub it with the grain.its a long process but it will bring it back like new. and if your not painting it again rub down with some danish oil it will look great .have fun it will probally drive you to distraction but well worth the effort. ps always wear gloves and goggles when you work with these stripping agents

Nitromores is good but it might be easier and quicker to use a hot air gun and scraper.
Some of the more expensive heat guns have nozzle attachments to get into awkward areas.
Hope this helps.

What about a heat gun and scrapper?

In the UK, Nitromors is excellent and available from B&Q, Focus and others.

Heat gun, as chemicals are environmentally unfriendly, you won't enjoy breathing them it, and they will affect the wood. Just be careful you don't burn the wood.
