race should be only relevant if the crime was motivated with race in mind

Because the poor downtrodden members of the minorities that are far more responsible for criminal acts, per capita, will burn down their homes and businesses in a fit of rage over any perceived inequity, and then over stress the Canadian welfare system. The culture of victimhood serves them well.
Nice civilized Canadians are far too polite and correct to point out the obvious when someone's feelings might get hurt. My Canadian wife had to learn the truth the hard way, here in the USA, when she was robbed, beaten, and permanently scarred on her face by members of a minority she was giving a ride home from work.

What difference does it make what race the person was? A criminal dirtbag is a criminal dirtbag no matter what colour they are. Who cares about the colour of their skin. People need to get over the whole race issue and focus on people as a whole.

They don't want to be like the US. Also, they have depictions and drawings and eye witnesses which are the least source of telling of race. Remember that white woman who drown her kids and blamed it on a black guy? For that same reason.

Because of the propensity of idiots to blame everyone in the same ethnic group for what one individual did. If you are talking about the shootings in Montreal, the man's name was published, and from that, it is easy to tell his ethnicity. And he was not Muslim.
