A connecting rod connects a piston to a crankshaft. It is pinned, but can pivot at the piston end, and is connected to the crankshaft at the rod journal, usually with rod bearing, which is a split bushing. When the cylinder fires, the piston pushes down on the connecting rod, which inturn, causes the crankshaft to rotate.

It is a rod what connects things.
Usually it connects the piston to the crankshaft, one end is bigger than the other and the smaller end is called the little end and the larger the Big End, A Gudgeon Pin or Wrist Pin connects the little end to the Piston whilst the Big end is is usually arranged to have a removable cap on Car and Truck engines so that it can be fitted around the crankshaft, Bike engines often have a one piece Connecting (Con) rod with a roller bearing but these have built up crankshafts.
Steam Railway engines have Con rods connecting the pistons to the wheels, or to the crank axles, but they also have rods connecting the wheels together, these are Coupling Rods, not Con Rods.

A connecting rod is an internal part of the engine that unless you go into engineering you will probably never see , in the motor trade it is better known as "the con-rod" this is because some garages can hear the knock that you have told them about but have no idear what it is that is causing this , so it gives them the excuse to strip your engine into bits to try and find the cause , then you end up with a very big bill , hence the name con-rod . you cannot tell if a con-rod is bent or damaged in any way untill you strip the engine down .

A connecting rod "connects" the piston to the crankshaft, when the crankshaft rotates it forces the piston up and down in the cylinder by way of the connecting rod.

Couple two mechanical pieces together. A common type of connecting rod are the ones that connect your car's pistons to its crankshaft (to the crank pins). They transfer the motion of the piston to the rest of the engine so that the car can move.

a connecting rod is hooked on the piston on 1 end and the other end is hooked on the crank.when the crank turns around it pushes and pulls the piston up and down the cylinder wall.
