the sump is the area in which the most oil in the oil pan is located. The oil pump has a screen like item which protrudes down into the oil pan. This item picks up oil from the sump and distributes oil via the oil pump to various parts of the engine to keep the engine lubricated. If you don't change your oil regularly, the sump screen can become clogged causing premature engine failure. The petrol tank is the gas tank....and for some reason I think you already know all this.

The sump is where the engine oil collects at the bottom of the engine block if you look under the car you will see it between the wheels it usually has a drain plug to release the old oil into a container and then refill on the top of the engine with fresh oil

The petrol tank lives underneath the car's floor, usually below the rear seat (although sometimes they are below the boot/trunk floor, or sometimes below the front seats). It hold the fuel that powers the engine.

The sump is on the bottom of the engine. It hold the oil that is used to lubricate the engine's components (and protect them from corrosion). See http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine.htm
