Much depends on the species of orchid you are growing, but you don't identify it. Best advice is to do a Yahoo search for "orchid care" (include the quotation marks in the search box). It will yield 178,000 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I'm sure that you will quickly find the information you seek.
Good luck with your search.

Put the plant in a dry cool place (around 50 degrees farenheit is good, but not below freezing), and basically leave it alone. Do not transplant it, do not water it more than once a week, and then just a very small amount. Make sure it is in something that the water drains quickly out of. Do not allow the orchid to stand in water. Many orchids only flower once a year and under cool conditions contrary to what most people believe. (They bloom in tropical winter) Once it does bloom again, keep it in a cool area, and never in full sun. In this way your orchid will hold it's blooms for 6-8 weeks generally. I personally keep my orchids inside my air-conditioned home, when they are in bloom, in front of a window for sunlight, but protected from the extreme heat. My flowers stay intact for a long time.

Most orchids only flower once on a stem. A phaleanopsis may produce a secondary flowering branch off of the main flower stem, maybe not.
You ought to go to www.aos.org, determine the kind of orchid you have, then check out their care sheets for the different types.

You should cut the flower stem back to the 3rd node( bump on the stem), keep it in non direct sunlight and instead of watering like other plants sit it in abowl of lukewarm water for half an hour a week. They prefer to take water that way. you should have new blooms before you know it.
