you may not be getting the shifter into park all the way. This is common. If that is not the problem then I suggest replacing the key and tumbler

under the steering colum is a 1in squire opening, remove it with a small screwdriver (it pops out) .Inside is a selenoide you can push with your finger. Push and hold this and you'll be able to remove your key. I have a 97 Grand Am and had the same problem. Easy to do. Good luck.

the shifter needs to be adjusted on it,,all its doing is not letting it go all the way in to the park position,,i own a repair shop,,and this is common after one gets a few miles on it to have to be re-adjusted,,its no big deal to do,,any repair shop can do it for you,,it should cost around 30 dollars to get it done i wouldn't go to a dealer to have it done ,because there hourly rate is very high, until you get it repaired you will have to shift it kind of hard ,when you put it in park,,other than that it will be OK,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

one thing it could be that a cable or selonoid isn`t letting the key cyl turn all the way to off. Some floor shifters have this mechanical device to prevent key removal unless its in park. Then again it might be a defective key cyl

didn't they have some kind of recall on the grandams. something about the ignition key wouldn't turn and then later it caught on fire. I'm not sure on the year but we had a grandam and we got a recall letter and had to take it to the shop. It was in the 90's

if your battery is going bad , that model wont allow you to shut the key all the way off , try wiggling your cables or jumping your battery next time it happens

make sure that it is going fully into the park position. it might need to be put into gear then back into park to allow it to release.
