Still possible to ski on a budget. Yes, As(s)pen and Vail are places to be seen and where it generally costs money to ski, but the local hills are still "relatively" affordable.

I've been skiing all my life. I'm a regular guy in an average job. When I ski locally there are plenty of regular families and individuals skiing, not necessarily rich but when I go out to big resorts in the Rockies I feel like the population breaks down into 3 groups. The bartenders, waiters and other workers who are there for the skiing, the wealthy there on vacation and I have my own group all to myself.

Downhill skiing is getting to be that way. Have you looked at the price tags on skis, poles, boots, clothing etc., and added in the price of lift tickets? It isn't cheap. Cross country skiing, on the other hand, is very inexpensive. And much better for you from a health and exercise point of view.

Disagree. $399/yr buys you unlimited skiing at breck, keystone and a basin plus 10 days at vail or beaver creek (all in the rockies). Assuming you allready own your own equipment. Not too bad, have you priced hockey equip. lately?? golf clubs??? Seems like the only cheap sport these days is running.

I always thought horse racing was more the sport of the rich (those who are involved, at least, as opposed to those who gamble on it). And if you really want to get snooty, croquet and billiards would be up there too.

Because it costs a lot of money to:
1) Buy / rent the gear.
2) Rent a chalet / hotel.
3) Insurance.

it like golf , polo, and yachting were the province of the rich. All are expensive hobbies, and usually very restrictive and limited for people outside of a certain economic level.
