This is a difficult question to answer. The answer will depend on your health, your age, whether or not the absent mindedness is recent or has always been there. Phew!

Assuming that you are not over 45, menopausal, recovering from either an emotional or physical trauma, and are in generally good health, I would suggest that you are "overloaded". Perhaps with tasks that need to be completed immediately, or with unconscious thoughts about issues that will soon have to be dealt with - relationship issues, parent issues, employment issues, school issues -they all take up "executive function" space.

Memory has basically two components - crystalized and fluid.

Crystalized memory involves memories that usually involve a significant event or remembered ritual (Always turn off the stove,Yoga every Tuesday for the last 6 months, my Fifth birthday party, the time the dog bit me when I was a kid, call mom on Sunday, regularly dialed phone numbers).

Fluid memory involves things that are not usually "fixed " occurrances ( shopping lists, times to meet a friend, where I put my keys when I came in with a bag of stuff, pick up my shirts at the Dry Cleaners, now that I live alone I have to remember to check the mailbox, etc. )

By it's nature, fluid memory is the most subject to error - the things you are trying to remember are not yet, or may never be, "ritual".

If you are forgetting "fluid" things, I would think that you are either "overloaded" with other thoughts or that the things you are trying to remember are not yet a "ritual". Lots of emotions, changes, schedules, interefere with our "fluid" memory and this can be normal.

If you are forgetting "crystized" memory items, I would suggest a visit to the doctor. If that is the case, this isn't the forum to get advice.

Good Luck!

By the way, the answer by Cpt.Jacki... is probably the funniest one I have ever seen on here! It wasn't belittling, rude - just absolutely great!

Old age? Anxieties? Headaches?

By the way, you told me earlier that you'd be voting my answer the best irregardless and lending me £50. Hope you remembered.

(seriously, everyone goes through little spells of absent mindedness, it's probably because you've got something else on your mind right now or something)

Same as some others but do you smoke dope? It has a really negative effect on your memory...

Do you sleep well? Lack of sleep will not help with memory power?

Anyhoo, take note of the other suggestions and you will find the answer..somewhere!

People forget things when they are anxious, or because they are multi-tasking. Try relaxing and prioritising things.

You have omitted your age and lifestyle which are important in answering the question properly. If your very young, perhaps a lack of concentration and focus and if you're a young adult it could be results of drugs which diminish your faculties, It could be a very natural progression of old age, or even they onset of something more serious. Please be more specific.
