I had preeclampsia in my first pregnancy. Put on bedrest at 34 weeks, and induced at 37. Induction didn't take, so they kept trying. They insisted on an epidural at 8 cm, saying that it could help bring my pressure down. But it didn't. And it didn't really do anything about the pain, either. (More on why in just a sec...) After 52 hours of labor, and 3 hours of pushing, the OB said that I could keep trying, if I wanted to, but that my pressure was skyhigh, the baby was in distress, and she wouldn't vouch for the outcome. So I had an emergency C-section. Once they got me in the OR, they discovered that I had a skeletal abnormality that wouldn't allow her head to pass. (The epidural would have worked except that her head was jammed up against my previously-broken-and-badly-healed tailbone, which was causing bone pain that the epidural couldn't touch. They were calling nurses and doctors in to look at it; it was apparently quite impressive.) And she was really wedged in there: it took two sets of hands and a vacuum to get her out. Poor baby!
Recovering from that C-section, when I was also recovering from a hard labor, was the worst.
I developed a milder case of preeclampsia the second time around, but, because of the prior C-section, I couldn't be induced. And, of course, the pelvic abnormality was still there. So they told me to schedule this birth, at 38 weeks, and any future ones.
Second C-section was much better.
Both kids were born jaundiced. The second one had an asymptomatic thrush infection that she passed to me, where it got into my milk ducts.
And a new study shows that 1 in 8 babies is now born prematurely, and that even kids born at 38 weeks have more ongoing medical problems and higher health care costs than babies born at 40 weeks. And another one shows that mothers who deliver by C-section are THREE TIMES more likely to die during or immediately after childbirth than mothers who deliver vaginally.
So...all the more reason to go to 40 weeks if you can and deliver naturally if at all possible.

I also had preeclampsia. It is a malfunction in the babies placenta which causes your kidneys to fail. The first sign is high blood pressure. The swelling of your face, hands, or feet. If they suspect that you have it they will admit you to the hospital for a 24 hour urine test for protein. If it is positive, they will induce you if your far enough along (30 weeks or so for single birth). There is no cure accept giving birth. You are more likely to get it in your first preg. or if you are carrying multiples, or if your mom had it. For me it was all 3. I had my twins 7 weeks early. 4LBs each, but they are fine now. Doctor know what they are doing!

My first L&D was like clockwork--no problems, easy labor (with the help of an epidural and a positively HOT anesthesiologist! :)) and healthy baby.
My second son was in distress. I felt no fetal movement all day, so I went to the L&D ward and did a NST and found out that when I had contractions it was putting him in distress and causing his heart rate to plummet. C-section was routine--no complications from that. My second son was born with a meconium plug, but that's it. Pretty common, and he's fine now. (14 months old!)

With my daughter I was in hard labor for 13 hours at 33 weeks induced due to BP was 200/113 and swelling and the amount of protein in my urine (eclampsia) then I fell asleep later that night and my daughter's HB dropped so they put me on O2 and then lunch time day after thanksgiving they decided to just do a C-section. I couldn't dialate over 1cm after being there for 2 weeks.

I had preeclampsia really bad my first pregnancy and was on bedrest for about 2 months. Was in the hospital for 2 weeks then had my son. I was induced, but my son's heartbeat dropped extremely low multiple times, so we had an emergency c section. NO FUN. I had preeclampsia again with my daughter, but got it later, and not as bad. She was born a whole month later than my son, and it all turned out wondefully. Good luck!!

My blood pressure went sky high so I had to get an epidural (which looking back on it I was crazy to try it without).
