i always heard that this transmission will shift into second even if you manually shift it into first, to prevent engine blowup. but i just ran my 350 up to 5500 rpms in first gear and it still wouldn't shift...why is this?

The turbo 400 will do the automatic upshift you are talking about at around 4500 to 5000 rpm but the 350 will stay in low gear as long as you want it to

actually i did see this years ago. but it was a thm 400 rather than a 350. i believe it was in a mid to late 60's impala. he dropped it in low, punched it, and it did "panic shift" out of low. we thought it was pretty cool. his folks didn't.
also, there was no tach in this car, so i don't know when it shifted.

Whether or not the transmisstion shifts is determined by the governor in the transmission.

i've been doing parts all my life, i've never heard that. someone's yanking your chain. if you put the thing in first, it's in first and that's all. if you put it in second, you will get first and second. if it's in drive, you get all 3.
