I think the answer is layered
It somewhat satisfies my desire to create something.
It adds some meaning to my life by giving it a definition
Money in your pocket (or bank) is like stored energy, and some extra energy is usually a good thing.
It's what I as an individual can do to contribute to society.
But you did use the term "so hard" , and you are right. I work too hard. I think success is not only a carrot on a stick, but if you achieve it, it's addicting.

Yes, I have work ethic. I'm loyal, I don't steal. I work hard. I don't blame other people if something goes wrong. I have humility, I take pride. I have guts. I don't leave something for someone else if I can do it. I respect the bosses. I respect the other employees, etc.
I am motivated by a sense of duty, knowing the job has to be done, and that I will be rewarded in the end (mostly by a pay check).

I work but, I fail to see what that has to do with ethics!
For expmple, I work at an Internet Cafe & Game Room and there is nothing ethical about it. People come there to play and fool around, gamble and entertain certain vanities!
Ironically even the Smithsonian considers me to be a Writting Master, something I couldn't by a job doing, despite the fact that the West is near extinct with respect to people who understand and can demonstrate the etymology of Western Chancery! No where is the ethics in that?

No, I don't have a work ethic.
I do have a cooperation ethic. One part of life that can be particularly satisfying is cooperating with others. I get a lot of fun and joy from this.
As long as I feel like it is labor or "work" I don't enjoy it. When I see it as helping people out (which nearly all "work" is) it makes it much more satisfying.
Even if I had all the money in the world, I'd still want to help out and cooperate with others.

Yes, I totally have a work ethic.
I work hard because I love what I do.
What motivates me is the job and the satisfaction I get by helping people with the work I do.

Absolutely -
My reputation is everything in my field - always on time - no BS or excuses, always own up to your own mistakes - ALWAYS be honest. When you do discover a mistake - figure out how to correct it before telling the boss - he wants to know what makes it better - not what's wrong.
My paycheck motivates me - plus raises, good reviews, trust, and advancement in the company.

Always give a little bit extra, and remember, no matter how disagreeable things get at times, the employer is paying me to do the job. I love work.

To be honest...no I don't
I do what I need to do but I don't go out of my way to do more....I have a good job and make a good salary.
I work to afford me the lifestyle I have.....a very nice home, vacations, going out to dinner, nice clothes, nice cars, saving for retirement.
Sadly I get no joy out of working....I live for evenings & weekends.
