Ma-ma is not an unusual first sound for babies to make. At 5 months, she is learning to vocalize many different sounds and will begin to put the sounds together to make real words. At first they will happen quite by accident. She will get her cues from you. If she happens to say ma-ma, you will, of course, express great joy at that. Getting a pleasant response will be the impetus she needs to keep on doing it. Developmental milestones are strictly guidelines. Some babies develop skills at earlier than the guidelines and some later and it is still normal for them. If your daughter begins developing her communication skills early, it may be quite common for her to lag a little behind in physical milestones such as sitting alone and crawling. Babies are busy little people learning a lot of new stuff every day. My third child was an early talker, said her first sentence "Be right back" at 13 months and hasn't stopped since - she's 21 now.

That's what I hear. But my daughter now 17 months, said MAMA first too. Until this day her favorite word is mama or mom or Mommy.

I guess that normally babies do say d words and b words first, but my oldest 2 said mama first and my third (at 8 months) said his own name (Isaiah) as his first word.

At 5 months they are learning to make different sounds. I dont think she intentionally said mama.

I have heard of infants (about the age of your baby) actually saying their first word. Although its quite early. Yes, for some reason most toddlers say Dada first.

My 9 year old Granddaughter said Apple as her first word, then she said it 22 times.
And yes she still talks a lot.

She didn't say mama - you just wish she did so much that you imagined it. It's not that weird, because a lot of new mothers do that.

This was very intersting to me. I am 23 years old now. My first word was "car" and I was almost four years old... Guess I was a late talker, but dont worry I have made up for lost time. :)

it is harder for them to say m words then d words but you two must have a close bond very close.
