I have a walnut tree in my back yard and it is beautiful in the summer, but when it starts dropping the nuts I have to get my glass picnic table out of the way and move over because it dumps a bizillion nuts everywhere. Is there anyway to make this tree stop putting out nuts or do you know of a quick way to pick them up?

Short of killing the tree, you can't stop it from producing nuts. We rake our black walnuts up every couple of days before the hulls start to rot and turn black. We learned the hard way about walking on the black hulls and tracking the mess into the house and ruining carpeting. The stain is terrible.

On the plus side, once the hulls are dried out and removed, you are left with a delicacy. Black walnut cake and other baked goods are delicious. In my part of the country, you can sell your unshelled black walnuts (with the green/black hulls removed) in the fall season. You get paid by the hundred weight and it is not unusual to see people stopping on country roads to gather the nuts.

Good luck with your walnut trees.

Use a shovel. Or spread a plastic table cloth under and pick up a bunch at a time. Walnuts are messy and they stain so be careful of your clothing.

I have tool for picking up pecans and have used it for picking up large hickory nuts and it works fine. It should work for walnuts as well.

It is shown at the following site under nut gatherer : http://www.pecanworld.com/pecans.htm

The only alternative to raking them up that I can think of is to spread several fine mesh fishing nets under the tree while suspending them on poles. This will keep your nuts from hitting the ground, allow for easier pick up, and not kill your grass all at the same time. :)

Buy some cheap hot dogs and buns, grill them up and invite the neighborhood kids over to practice their Easter Egg Hunting skills. The one that collects the most wins. Offer appropriate gift for winner.

Industrial Vacuum. lol. You could get a strong canvas umbrella to put over your glass table to protect it. If you don't want the nuts, rake 'em and shovel 'em.
