Most women (the ones who are actually normal looking) look at fashion ads and adore them, but they think, "I won't look that good in the clothes," because we are not a size zero! Also, if you actually look at the ordering details at the bottom of the ad, it will usually say, "Sizes 0-6 available."

Spain recently rejected 30% of its models for its fashion week because they were too skinny. They gave them a BMI (Body mass index) and those who were under the healthy level of body fat were not allowed to be in the fashion show. They did this because they are sick of anorexic role models who are making their teenage girls develop eating disorders.

When will America adapt this attitude?

Soon, I hope.

I don't understand why young girls starve to look like skeletal models. When I was in high school, my friends and I used to laugh at the way models looked in magazines. We always thought those cool clothes they were wearing would look so much better on US !

Well, personally i think that models don't really start out annorexic. They see other skinny models and want to compete with them. Annorexic actuall doesn't really look good. I mean, when you starve yourself, the body eats on the muscle first. You'll lose strength and our shape. Models like Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks, and Gisele aren't annorexic. The are good examples of models. America may not adapt to that kind of attitude, but people shoudl still be aware that annorexic models may not look as good as normal models. If you reall do not agree with Ameria's method, then maybe you should become a fashion designer. Make larger sizes and hire normal looking people! It might just make a difference.

I think we are, very slowly. The tide is slowly starting to turn--more people are speaking out in favor of healthy-looking models, but it's interesting to see where they're coming from. It seems to be the generation that's not quite old enough to have a proper voice yet, unfortunately. Flip through the letters to the editor in nearly any fashion magazine--no mention of the models' sizes. Now pick up a Seventeen, a CosmoGirl, or another teen magazine--almost every issue will have a letter praising the magazine for using a decently-sized model or scolding them for a lack thereof. It'll take some time for this smart, focused generation to grow up and start making a difference--but I do believe they will.

I've been wondering the same thing!!! The clothes my daughter wants to wear in some teen catalogs; aren't even made for girls with large breasts! What she can wear out of there is minimal. It is all made for the super flat chested!! She is only a size 6!! It is really frustrating!!! I wish the U.S. would adopt the same attitude! I just answered a question from a teen on here; she asked if her friend that hasn't had her period in 3 months, could be anything other than pregnant! I said, "Yes, does she starve herself?" Alot of girls that have anorexia stop their periods! I agree with you totally!

First off anorexia is a serious disease. When someone is thin and you call them an anorexic it's the same as calling them a cancer patient, and it's disrepsectful.

Secondly, If US Women bought clothes and magazines featuring hefty models then the fashion/magazine industry would use them. Right now in the US, women are more apt to buy things when a skinny model is selling them.

Finally, if the magazines and models and celeberties are making everyone want to be so skinny, why is EVERYONE SO DANG FAT???? Americans are Europeans are bigger than ever and getting bigger every year!

They're too insensitive to see the affect they're having on our society. Eating disorders are growing (males and females) and the media still exploits "celebrities" if they weigh more than 95 pounds. Remember Christina Aguillera? When she was a little curvier? The media tore her to shreds...Look at Nicole Richie...if she turns sideways...you can't see her.

Clothing lines like "Apple Bottoms" are catering to women with curves...the celebrities they use look like real women...not the sticks on TV.

Some women are naturally thin, but when you endorse a 500 calorie a day diet...and you're working out like crazy on top of that...there's a real problem.

They just had a story on our news. They said the average runway model is 5'9" + and weighs 100 lbs. They eat an apple for breakfast a protein bar for lunch and a small salad for dinner! That is not healthy!! They are no where near normal!

The only way is if we as a culture tell them that too skinny is not sexy. By our purchasing those name brand clothes we are condoning their presentation of the product.

Probably not. Do you really think the weight-loss industry (pills, special low-cal foods, gym equipment) would really let that happen?
