Well do you want new or used? If it's gotta be less than 5 grand, go for a used Hyundai Elantra. My sister has one and they're good cars. I myself have a used Hyundai Sonata, and I love it. Hyundais are one of the best cars out right now.

Don't get a Beetle or a Mini Cooper...even used, they are expensive...much more than 5 grand!

Do NOT get an Acura of any sort. You're only 16...Acuras are considered to be sports cars and your insurance will be sky high. It'll be high anyway since you're 16, but maybe you should contact your insurance company to see what they recommend for a first-time car.

You've had lots of good suggestions already.

Best bet is something European or Japanese which are usually more fuel economic as well as being stylish.

The VW Polo (if you have that model in the States) is slightly smaller than the Golf but still very robust - a great first car.

PS FiredUp - are you mad, suggesting an inexperienced driver go for a great tank of a car!

Mitsubishi Eclipse, or Nissan Altima. They're not that expensive and very comfortable to be in. They have a pretty good safety rating (nissan has a better safety rating) and is well on gas

DON'T GET A FOCUS!!!! they are crappy. but if you only have 5000 to work with then chances are any car you get are gonna be crappy, maybe a Mercury Cougar?. if you can get 10,000 you can get more choices, like a Honda Accord Coupe or maybe even a Scion TC.

Nissan Sentra, yes I know it looks like crap, but get a slightly older one and spend the rest of the 5 grand on a killer stereo system.
