Best advice is to be careful fertilizing too late in the season. You don't want to stimulate new growth just when the grass is entering the dormant winter period. Here is my favorite lawn care website:

Good luck with your lawn.

The best way that I can think to fertilize your yard for next spring is this...
Go down to the local pet store and buy the cheapest dog food you can find. Spread that all over your yard for three solid days. Put dinner scraps you can find in various places as well through out your yard. In about five days every turd hound from here to the Mississippi will be coming to poop in your yard let the poop stand until spring then mow it on low and spread the poop real evenly. This will produce a nice new growth of lawn, or so I have heard.

I wait until the last of the leaves have fallen, then I mow the lawn to chop them into mulch and leave it. It's the least labor intensive way to fertilize!

depends on where you live,,weedkillers don't work in weather below 65 degrees and lawns don't grow in cold weather, lime is good to put on your lawn in the fall when the rain starts comming then fertilize in the spring.
