Don't ever use just "SIMPLE" usb to usb cord!!! It will damage your computer. Use "SPECIAL" LAPLINK CABLES for this purpose! When you have it install the accompanied cd driver and you're ready.

There are three kinds of LAPLINK cables (see link): USB Cables, Serial cable, and lastly Parallel cable which is cheap and easy to use even without driver to install (I have USB Cable and Parallel cable).

Your OLD Win98 machine needs the USB driver to make it work for your USB flash. When you buy USB flash, install the accompanied cd to your old Win98 machine. Latest machines (and WinXP os) don't need this installation.

I dont think there is a usb to usb cord that will work for file transfer, you might just take out you're old hdd and put it in the new comp as a slave drive, then copy paste from the "E:" drive that is the old one

or you could buy a usb harddrive enclosuer and put your old hdd in that so you dont need to open your new comp, then just copy and paste again, amazon has them for US $35

another solutuon is to network them together and share the root of the old comps hdd and copy and paste.

this stuff can be difficult and isnt easy for beginners, but you can always post another question for more details
