The earliest world news event that I remember was the birth of "Shamu," the first killer whale born in captivity in 1985 (when I was 5). The next year when I was 6 was the year of the Challenger disaster, and one of my high school teachers was among the finalists for the teachers in space program, but was not selected to go on that fateful flight. I was thankful to have had her, because she was a great teacher. So in high school again we always had a remembrance each year for the Challenger crew because she had been so close to becoming one of them.

I was really little, but I remember the talks going on between Reagan and Gorbechev in the 80's. I was scared to death that there would be a war and I'd die!

The McCarthy hearings. I can remember my mom watching them all day when I was a very small child. I hated it being on TV all day because I wanted to see Howdy Doody and Hopalong Cassidy.
